Thesis Film: HOMEWARD |
Homeward is a short film highlighting the causes of homelessness and the solutions that could be, and are already being, implemented to solve this national crisis. The film covers the story of Sherman Dubois, a local artist, and elder who experienced chronic homelessness, and the organization that helped him to obtain housing. Presentation Partners in Housing (PPiH) is an organization in the Fargo-Moorhead area (on the border of North Dakota and Minnesota) that assists people, currently or at risk of, experiencing homelessness. The housing model that PPiH uses is called Housing First. This model, first implemented in parts of the U.S. in the 1990s, is explained by the National Alliance to End Homelessness as follows: "Homelessness is a problem with a solution, and that solution is housing. For everyone. Whether you follow the rules or not. Whether you are “compliant” with treatment or not. Whether you have a criminal record or not. Whether you have been on the streets for one day or ten years. Permanent housing is what ends homelessness. It is the platform from which people can continue to grow and thrive in their communities."
